Drinking plenty of water can make you gain weight

Water is vital to human life, as we all know. As hydration is a basic human need, maintaining proper hydration is essential to good health.

Drinking lots of water is important, even if you’re on a diet to lose weight. In addition to carrying nutrients and oxygen throughout the body, water gives you more energy to carry out various tasks. However, going overboard with this could even work against your weight loss goals. Indeed, it is true that consuming too much water might contribute to weight gain.

Water retention in the body

Sometimes, the extra fat that you notice in your body is partly water weight. If you consume excessive water in one go, rather than having it throughout the day, your kidneys will not be able to keep up to it. They will not be able to remove the excess of water from the body. Excessive intake of fluids also imbalances the electrolytes in the body. Moreover, if the diet you follow is high in sodium and low in potassium, your chances to retain water increases.

Water pollutants

If the water you consume is not purified then might get exposed to pollutants. As per a study published in the journal “Obesity” in 2010, some persistent organic pollutants can be lead to weight gain.

Other disadvantages of having an excess of water

Excess intake of water can also lead to another health problem called “hyponatremia”. This condition occurs when a person drinks lots of water in a short period of time. Hyponatremia causes your blood and electrolytes to become diluted and it may lead to nausea, vomiting, confusion, and swelling of the brain.

How much water you should consume in a day

There is no fixed amount of water a person should drink in a day. The quantity depends on a variety of factors such as weight, activity, and environment. As per science, women should consume at least 3 liters of water every day and men should consume 3.5 liters of water every day.
