For Women: Why your feet get swollen or stiff during your period

It’s not widespread knowledge that foot swelling or stiffness during menstruation is a sign of the menstrual cycle.

On the other hand, bloating and changes in fluid retention are sometimes associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) in certain women.

Hormonal shifts, namely those involving the levels of progesterone and estrogen, might impact the body’s water balance during the menstrual cycle.

Bloating and general discomfort can be caused by women who retain extra water in the days preceding their menstrual cycle.

Though it might potentially affect other regions of the body, such as the feet, this water retention is typically more apparent in the breasts and abdomen.

You should rule out other possible explanations if you have significant or chronic swelling in your feet, especially if this isn’t a common symptom for you.

Some conditions that can lead to swelling in the feet include:

  1. Anemia: Anemia is a condition characterized by a deficiency of red blood cells or hemoglobin in the blood, leading to reduced oxygen-carrying capacity.

When the body doesn’t receive enough oxygen, it may respond by retaining fluids, which can contribute to swelling, especially in the lower extremities like the feet and ankles.

  1. Venous insufficiency: This occurs when the veins in your legs have trouble sending blood back to the heart, leading to fluid buildup and swelling.
  2. Lymphedema: This is a condition where the lymphatic system is not functioning properly, leading to swelling, often in the legs or feet.
  3. Kidney or heart problems: Issues with the kidneys or heart can affect fluid balance in the body and lead to swelling in the extremities.
  4. Medication side effects: Some medications may cause fluid retention as a side effect.
  5. Injury or strain: Physical injury or strain can lead to localized swelling in the affected area.
