AFCON 2023: Go for Gold – Akufo-Addo to Black Stars

Ghana’s senior national football team, the Black Stars, have been inspired by President Nana Akufo-Addo to approach the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with confidence and a “can-do” mentality.

He voiced hope that the team would eventually win the trophy, which Ghana has been missing for more than 40 years.

At the team’s camp in Kumasi, President Akufo-Addo attended a goodbye dinner with important guests, including Hon. Seth Adjei Baah, Board Chairman of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Youth and Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif, and Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei Mensah.

The Black Stars’ pre-tournament preparations in Kumasi came to an end with this farewell, which resulted in a goalless draw against Namibia on January 8. Ghana’s AFCON trip starts on January 14 against Cape Verde, with additional matches against Egypt and Mozambique. Ghana was drawn in Group B with Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique.

Minister Ussif echoed the President’s assurances, expressing a strong conviction in Coach Chris Hughton’s team to bring an end to Ivory Coast’s AFCON trophy drought.

The Black Stars are set to depart Accra for Abidjan on January 10, where they will finalize their preparations before the crucial opening match against Cape Verde on Sunday.
